ENTERTAINMENTS
CIVIC PICTURES. LAST NIGHT OF “THE ETERNAL CITY” AND TOM MIX. On view at the Civic for the last time to-night is a photoplay which comes nearer to perfection in entertainment than any of the many pictures we have ever seen. The picture is “The Eternal City,” based on Hall Caine’s novel and modernised with the author’s approval Story, cast, direction, settings and acting—all are practically flawless. Ibis First National picture, which was produced by George Fitzmaurice in Rome, is enacted by a cast which boasts of such well-known names as Barbara La Marr, Bert Lytell, Lionel Barrymore, Montagu Love and Richard Bennett. The plot is poignant and dramatic, centering about the love affair of Donna Roma and David Rossi, the parts taken by Miss La Marr and Mr Lytell. The settings are a revelation. The entire company was transported to Rome by Mr Fitzmaurice, and the many historic ruins of the “Eternal City,” including the Coliseum and the old Roman Baths, form the background of this fictional masterpiece. On the supporting programme is a most amusing and thrilling Tom Mix picture, “Ladies to Board.” There is plenty of breeze and laughter in this comedy, together with more of the famous Mix stunts. Snookey, the “humanzee,” is also on the bill. ALBION LAST NIGHT. “MY OLD KENTUCKY HOME,” “THE MAN ALONE,” AND SNOOKY COMEDY. The final screenings of the delightful programme screening at the Albion take place to-night. No one should miss “My Old Kentucky Home,” for it is even a better picture than ‘Way Down East.” You’ll love Monte Blue in “My Old Kentucky Home,” a Master Picture. We’re partial to Monte, anyway, but this time he seems better than ever before. These is so much character and man about him. You’ll agree with us that he’s a dear. You couldn’t help it. That reminds us we should say something about Sigrid Holmquist, too. She’s the girl in the case, as you can imagine—she’s as lovely to look at as she is capable—or vice versa—the surprise is that a good looking person can, after all, be skilful. A very fine sea picture starring Hobart Bosworth and a Snooky Comedy complete the entertainment.
