THE WOOLSTON FIRES.
FIRE SUPERINTENDENT’S RETORT. “A REMARKABLE COINCIDENCE.” (Special to the Times.) CHRISTCHURCH, September 16. Reporting to the Fire Board on the recent fire which practically destroyed the Woolston tanneries, Superintendent Warner of the Fire Brigade says it is certainly a remarkable coincidence that three disastrous fires have occurred in these tanneries within the past eight months, which places Christchurch in the unenviable position of creating a world’s record, for one place of business to be destroyed within such a short period.
The question of holding a Coroner’s inquest as to the cause of the fire was duly considered, but any evidence as to its origin was done away with long before the arrival of the first motor, and consequently it w’as not deemed expedient to hold such an inquiry.
