IVANHOE STUD SALE

SUCCESSFUL INITIAL OFFERING. RECORD PRICE FOR BULL. SALE AVERAGE OF 33 GUINEAS. In recent years Southland’s stud stock has become famous all over the Dominion, and even further afield to Australia, South Africa and the distant Argentine, and any sale of recognised quality stock invariably attracts strong competition from outside, in addition to a growing desire on the part of Southland farmers to keep as much of, the best blood in the province to build up their own herds. Consequently stud owners in the past year or so have been generally able to rely on strong competition for the pick of their herds. Yesterday’s sale at Eden dale, where Mr A. Weir offered his surplus stock, was no exception. It was the first sale of surplus Ayrshire stock in Southland, and the first in the South Island for many years, and the highly satisfactory prices realised must have been very gratifying to the painstaking studmaster of the well-known Ivanhoe herd. Li addition, the keen demand for this class of stock gives a good indication of the growing popularity of the Ayrshire as a profitable farm animal. A total of 81 lots was brought under the hammer, and the satisfactory sum of £2BlB 4/- was secured for the entry, which works out at an average of 33 guineas per head. The stock was paraded in first-class condition in Mr Weir’s specially-built sales pavilion, where extensive seating accommodation was provided. It is estimated that about 500 were present at the sale. Before the sale opened Mr Weir said it was the first of what he hoped to make an annual feature of his stud-breeding work. The reason for his decision to hold an annual sale was that he usually sold a draft of heifers each year, but generally to the one man, and he was getting inquiries from all over the place for his stock, so he had decided to hold an annual sale in order to give everyone a chance. Mr Weir said that he would guarantee the animals as described. Of course, there was an element of uncertainty in cows coming in, but should a cow be bad in one quarter, he would refund 50 per cent, of the purchase money over 25 guineas and should she be bad in two quarters he would return 100 per cent, of the purchase money over 25 guineas. With regard to animals not proving in calf, they would find his terms liberal. Circumstances would be considered in every case. It became evident early in the proceedings that Mr Q. Donald, the well-known Wairarapa breeder, and ex-All Black footballer, had come with a mission to purchase extensively. Mr Donald, who secured the record-priced Ayrshire bull of last year, was easily the biggest purchaser, securing twelve lots at a cost of 455£ guineas, to form the foundation of a herd in the Wairarapa. Mr Donald secured the high-priced cow, Ivanhoe Tulip, by Hindsward Jimmy— Lily of Glen weir, after spirited competition at 54 guineas. In fact, anything with the Hindsward Jimmy strain commanded good prices, this well-known sire at present being the leading butter-fat bull in the Dominion. Practically all the Hindsward Jimmy cows went to outside buyers, who had evidently come prepared to buy this strain. It was, however, left to a local breeder, Mr T. Dobbie, to secure the highest-priced animal of the sale, this being a handsome yearling bull, Ivanhoe Clear the Way, by Ivanhoe Baron—lvanhoe Fancy (14,2081bs of milk and 7131bs of fat). This bull has the Hindsward Jimmy strain close up on the dam’s side, together with the Fancy and King Cole blood, a combination unique in an animal of this breed. Mr Dobbie was also the second highest purchaser, and although he did not buy to the same extent as Mr Donald, his purchases were carefully selected, which meant that he had to pay high prices for his fancy. A good deal of favourable comment was expressed that so many of the top-notchers were staying in the district. Messrs Broad and McDonald, Messrs Wright, Stephenson and Co.’s auctioneers, conducted the sale, which was well managed in every respect. AVERAGES. Guineas.
