MR STEVENSON’S LAND POLICY.
To the Editor. Sir, —I notice in Tuesday’s issue of the Times a very angry letter by “Fairplay.” My former letter must have touched him “on the raw.” But, Mr Editor, the truth is invariably disturbing to those whose vanity blinds them to see the folly of their ways. I hope “Fairplay” will not be angry if I quote Burns' immortal lines: “0 wad some power the giftie gie us “To see ourselves as ithers see us! “It wad from many a blunder free us, “An’ foolish notion, “What airs in dress and gait would lea’e us, “An’ e’en devotion. “Fairplay’s” reference to the “Jackdaw Masquerading in peacock’s feathers,” is, I think, more applicable to himself than to this writer. I did not earn my living with my overcoat on, and polished boots. Yes, “Mr Fairplay,” I am a farmer, and a successful one. I attribute my. success to many years of hard work and economy. I regret to see so little of that grit and independence nowadays. Y.jur correspondent “Fairplay” complains that I did not give any information to fortify my objection to Mr Stevenson’s scheme. It would be waste of time to traverse Mr Stevenson’s columns of his fallacious scheme on land tenure and valuation. The •several points of defect in his scheme have been already pointed out in your leading articles, and not yet refuted. We are told by “Fairplay” that “readers in search of information” will not get it in such letters as mine. I did not write to entertain the public but to express my “want of faith” in Mr Stevenson’s land policy. Presumably, “readers in search of information” will get mental sustenance by perusing Mr Stevenson’s prolix letters! I am, etc., FARMER HODGE. June 24, 1924.
