A GOOD SURPLUS

THE P.& T. DEPARTMENT. (Per United Press Association), STRATFORD, June 21. Hon J. G. Coates was entertained at a banquet last night, over 100 guests being present. The Minister, who was warmly welcomed, in the course of his remarks stated that the Government intends to lay a submarins cable across Cook Strait for telephonic communication between the islands. The Minister said the idea was that every person in the Dominion should have facilities for telephonic communication with any other person in the Dominion. Referring to the Dominion’s post and telegraph services, the Minister said that after allowing £459,000 for wireless and other improvements, the year’s surplus of revenue over expenditure would be the second highest they had had, totalling £580,000 in round figures.
