DROWNING FATALITY

ACCIDENT ON MANAWATU RIVER. (Per United Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, June 22. A drowning fatality occurred at Karere on Saturday, A. W. Park, a single man, 23 years of age, losing his life in the Manawatu river. Deceased was foreman of a party employed by the Manawatu-Oroua Power Board, and was getting a wire across the river when the boat containing him and his companions overturned. Despite the efforts of his fellows Park was washed down stream. A search party of 25 was engaged to-day in dragging the river, but the body so far has not been recovered.

Great praise is bestowed by the Board’s engineer on an employee named Steer, who made gallant efforts to save his companion.

This is the third accident to members of the gang this week. J. Procter, who was injured earlier in the week while untrucking poles, still lies in the hospital in a dangerous condition.
