NEW CHURCH

SPEECH BY ARCHBISHOP REDWOOD. (Per United Press Association.) PALMERSTON NORTH, February 17. Unpleasant weather prevailed for thg laying of the foundation stone of the new church of St. Patrick’s Parish to-day, tha ceremony being performed by Archbishop Redwood in the presence of a large crowd. After speeches by the Mayor (Mr F. G. Nathan) and Father MacManus, Archbishop Redwood, in the course of his address, congratulated the pepple of Palmerston North and the parishipners>?n the new church and paid a tribute to the work of Father McManus, who had demonstrated faith, courage and cpofidence in his people. Tha church would be a lasting monument to his work. MB would serve to hand down the teachiugf of the Savious of truth and grace. He foresaw a great future for Palmgytoci North and predicted that soon it would be a Cathedral-city. Civilisation was drifting back towards paganism and when that came it would be worse than the old paganism. Archbishop Clune, of Perth, also addressed the gathering. Archbishop Redwood was presented with a gold trowel by the contractors. The church will cost over £30,000, of which over £15,000 is already in hand.
