PROPOSED POLAR FLIGHT
PREPARATIONS SUSPENDED (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright). WASHINGTON, February 16. (Received February 17, at 1.5 p.m.) At the result of popular and Congressional opposition to Shenandoah’s flight to the Polar region President Coolidge has ordered the Navy Department to cease preparations until Congress has an opportunity to express its views, especially as the expedition requires the expenditure of 350,000 dollars, and Congress might otherwise refuse the appropriate. Naval officers declare that unless Congress within ten days authorises the flight it must be abandonded for 1924 owing to seasonal obstacles in the Arctic regions.
