FRENCH FINANCES

THE REFORM MEASURES. A GOVERNMENT VICTORY. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright). PARIS, February 16. (Received February 17, 7.5 p.m.) The Government secured a vote of confidence by the Chamber rejecting by 301 to 212 an amendment of the Government proposal for an all-round increase in taxation by twenty per cent, to which there was very keen opposition. When M. Past al’s motion in favour of a Capital Levy, which the Government made a matter of confidence, was rejected by 353 votes to 201, the Socialists angrily shouted: “This is only a fluke victory. We will have the levy nevertheless.”
