IN TOWN AND COUNTRY. (By “Dorothy”). Miss Nancy Irving was in town during the week. Miss Watson is visiting friend- in Canter bury at present. Miss Story (Venlaw) left for Wellington on Thursday morning. Mr and Mrs H. Macalister left for the north last Tuesday morning. Mr and Mrs D. Kilkelly and Mrs Marshall have returned from Dunedin. Mrs W r . Strang and Miss Woods have returned from a holiday in the north. Mrs Henderson (Dunedin) is the guest of Mrs A. C. Millar, Bowmont street. Mrs R. B. Caws returned heme last Saturday from a holiday in Christchurch. Mrs W. D. Hunt and Miss E. Edwards left for Wellington on Thursday morning. Mrs E. Fraser, Layard street, returned from a short holiday in Timaru on Monday evening. Dr. and Mrs Ewart left to-day for Dunedin and Wanaka. Miss C. Morrah has accompanied them. Mr and Mrs R. T. Barnett and little Edwin left on Thursday morning for a holiday in Timaru. Mr and Mrs F. Webb, Mrs L. Webb and Miss Fynes Clinton left this morning by motor for Christchurch. A number of members of the Southend Croquet Club travelled our to Riverton and played the Riverton Club. Mr and Mrs W. F. Edmond motored dewn from Dunedin last Sunday and were at the Grand Hotel for a few days. Mrs and the Misses Storey, Venlaw, left during the week for Levin, to be present at the wedding of Miss S. AV. Wright to Mr J. Hunt. Several picnics were held on Monday to "The Rocks.” Messrs Lewis’s Ltd, the Bristol Piano Company and Messrs Begg and Co. spent the day at Riverton beach. Miss Crofts and Mrs Cowie have returned from Dunedin where they spent a- r delightful time principally on the Balmacewan Golf Links and at the Otago Women’s Club. Mrs E. J. Lilley, accompanied by Miss Q. Masters of --Viavi, Christchurch, is at present in Invercargill and is staying at 37 Thomson street. Mrs Lilley will return north in a week’s time. On Monday evening a most enjoyable concert was given at the Borstal Institution. Members of the famous Black family providing the greater part of the entertainment. Misses E. and M. Charleson and Miss.B. Lyons accompanied by Mrs H. Charleson | left by motor on Tuesday morning for thfe ' I Lakes and intend doing the Milford Track i before their return. i Mrs W. ,T. Cuthbertson and Miss Guthrie. Music levers and students will be delighted to know that Miss Vera Moore of Dunedin, who has just returned from London, where she has been studying the piano with her brother George Frederick Moore, at the Academy, will give one or two pianoforte recitals here early next month. Miss Vera Moore will be the guest of Mrs R. H. Hogg. The tenis learns representing Sounthland against Otago in Dunedin last Saturday was not as strong at it would have been if all those picked were able to take the trip. Some of those, who could not take the trip were Mrs Hall Jones, Miss Hayward, Messrs Gilmour and McNatty. Those who took the trip were Mesdames W. D. Cowie (Winton), Smart. Misses Rein, Hutton, Bain, Watson, Messrs Henderson Hewat, Lindsay. Hawkins, Macpherson (Wyndham) and Hinton. Miss Alexandra G. Keddie, of Oamaru, who has been appointed matron of the Southland Hospital by the Southland Hospital Board, was one of 14 applicants, and the final choice was between Miss R. Lochhoad (Hawerai and Miss Keddie. Miss Keddie was trained in the Timaru Hospital and was appointed matron of the Oamaru Hospital in 1910. • During the war period she served as matron of the Trentham Camp Hospital, and was afterwards submatron in the hospital ship Maheno. The appointment is subject to the confirmation of the Department of Health. A most enjoyable dance was given in the Friendly Societies’ Hall on Monday evening, the arrangements being in the hands of a n small private committee. About thirty couples occupied the dancing floor, the music being rendered by Humphrey’s orchestra and a delicious supper was served in the adjoining room. The lighting in the dancing hall was made beautifully soft by coloured paper over the lights. The supper tables were artistically decorated with all colours of sweet peas. The committee in charge of this dance are to be congratulated on the huge succes of the entertainment. Some of those present were: —Dr and Mrs Pottinger, Mr and Mrs G. M. Mr and Mrs W. E. Butcher entertained a number of their friends at a most enjoyable dance on Monday evening, the occasion being the coming of age of their son Alfred. The hall was very prettily decorated with festoons of coloured paper. The supper was arranged in- cabaret fashion, after which bon-bons were opened which had inside hats of various colours, shapes and sizes with a number on each. The fun then began when each person went around the ball seeking his cr her partner for the next dance. Included in the bon-bons were various other articles of amusement. Mrs Butcher received her guests in a long graceful gown of blue satin with overdress of net and sequins. Some of her guests were: Mr end Mrs F. C. Pedler, Mr and Mrs AV. Barker, Mr and Mrs T. Messrs Coakley, Kerse, Murray, Wilson, Yates (2), Stout, Dykes, Ott, Smith, Walsh, Collins, Carswell, O.Connor, Waterson, Taylor and Dobbs (Christchurch). WEDDING MILLAR—BALNEAVES. A pretty wedding was celebrated at the First Presbyterian Church on Tuesday morning when Gavin Baird Millar, youngest son of Mrs A. C. Millar, Bowmont street, was married to Jean Smith Baineaves, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs J. Bal- , neaves, “The Elms,” Mabel Bush. The Rev Robertson of AVaikiwi, was the officiating clergyman. The bride, whb was given away by her father, wore a cream jersey cloth frock over lemon crepe de chene, longwaisted,- caught at each side with silver roses, the usual veil with wreath of silver leaves and carried a cream bouquet of sweet peas and roses. The bridesmaid, Miss G. Baineaves, sister of the bride, wore an orange silk jersey frock with black hat and aeroplane bow. She carried a bouquet of sweet peas... Mr Sydney Webb was best man.
