PREMISES DESTROYED
FIRE AT WAVERLEY. A disastrous fire occurred at Waverley in the early hours of Thursday. The outbreak was discovered in Muir’s buildings, in which were three shops occupied by J. J. Patton (tailor), H. Daniels (confectioner and fruiterer) and G. McGorrery (grocer) and an office rented by W. H. James (commission agent). The fire was discovered by Mr and Mrs Daniels, who lived on the premises, and it had then a good hold, they having to make a hurried escape in their night attire. There was no fire brigade but the old members rallied and, assisted by a numbet of young men, the manual engine was requisitioned and the fire confined to the premises named. Patton had no insurance on his stock. Daniels, on his stock, had £4OO in the New Zealand and McGorrery £6OO on his stock in the Atlas. The buildings were insured for £2OOO in the South British.
