HIGH SCHOOLS

PRESENTATION OF PRIZES. BREAK-UP CEREMONY. The annual prize-giving ceremony in connection with the Southland Gir’=’ and Boys’ High Schools was held in tie Municipal Theatre last evening. Apart from the parents and others directly interested in the schools, a great many others, to whom the function has become a very popular event, were present and every part of the Theatre was packed. Mr R. A. Anderson, who recently resigned his position as chairman of the High Schools’ Board, presided and in a brief address expressed appreciation of the loyal services given to the schools by the respective staffs. He stated that unfortunately the prizes allotted this year fell far short of those given in previous years. It was not the fault of the Board which had received instructions from the Department that no amount should be taken from the fundus of the Board for prize-money or for sports. For this reason the Board had not been able to assist to the same extent this year. Nevertheless many people had generously donated prizes and to these the Board was greatly indebted. The Board also desired to thank the members of the orchestra for their assistance in making the entertainment part of the evening a success. During the evening the pupils of both schools provided an interesting and attractive programme. The girls, under the baton of Mr Charles Gray, gave a number of choruses and part songs which were very popularly received and which reflected credit not only on the girls themselves but upon their instructor. A team of girls also gave a very attractive display of club swinging and marching, while the boys under their instructor, Mr J. Page, gave an excellent gymnastic display. Mr A. Bain presented the prizes to the girls and Mr R. M. Strang to the boys. Following are the prize-lists:— BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL.
