HIGH SCHOOLS' BOARD

THE TEACHING STAFF RESIGNATIONS AND APPOINTMENTS SPECIAL BOARD MEETING. A special meeting of the Southland High Schools’ Board was held yesterday afternoon to consider certain appointments to the staffs of the Boys’ and Girls’ High Schools. Those present were, Messrs R. A. Anderson (chairman), A. Bain, J. A. F. Hawke and R. M. Strang. The following tendered resignations from the staff, Mr E. A. Boxall, assistant at the Boys’ High School, as from January 31, 1924; Mrs Boxall, assistant at the Girls* High School, and Miss A. Drennan, lady principal of the Girls’ High School. Miss M. A. Steele, 8.A., who has been on the staff of the Girls’ High School icr four years succeeds Mrs Boxall for the B position on the staff. Miss Steele has been in the service of the board for 7 years and is a training college teacher. Mr Kenneth C. McDonald, an ex-South-lander, was appointed to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Mr Boxall. Mr McDonald received his secondary education at the Gore High School, where he matriculated in 1917, getting highest marks in geography for the Dominion. In 1918 he was Dux of the school and in 1918 passed the Junior University Scholarship examination with credit. In 1920 he entered the Otago University, graduating in arts in 1922. He gained six first-class passes in his terms and was student assistant to the history professor. He also spent two years at the Dunedin Training College and gained a teacher’s B certificate. Mr McDonald also took an active part in the social life of the students and was in addition keenly interested in all branches of sport. The C position on the staff of the Girl/ School rendered vacant by the promotion of Miss Steele will be filled by Miss Earwaker, M.A., who at present occupies a D position on the staff. Miss Christina L. Cumming, MA., B daughter of Mr R. J. Cumming of Invercargill, has been appointed to fill the remaining vacancy on the staff of the girls' school. She was a pupil at the Southland Girls’ High School from 1910 to 1915, and took her B.A. degree at the Otago University in 1918 and her M.A. in 1919. She also spent a year at the Dunedin Training College and is at present on the staff of the Napier Girls’ High School.
