CLOSING SCHOOLS

EDUCATION BOARDS CHECKED. (Special to the Times.) WELLINGTON, November 19. The powers of education boards to close schools are to be checked by a new regulation issued by the Minister of Education. Schools must be kept open for the number of the days specified unless departmental approval is given for the closing of schools owing to special circumstances. It has been found in the past that some education boards have been much more lenient than others in allowing schools to be closed and it is the desire of the Minister that the practice should be made more uniform, especially with regard to the period of closing. It is felt that the interests of teachers as well as of school children will be fully conserved under the new regulation.
