DECIMATED BY WAR

HOW TURKEY SUFFERED. COMPULSORY MARRIAGE AS A REMEDY. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, November 19. (Received November 19, 10.0 p.m.) The Daily Telegraph says that the new census of Turkey shows that only 4,000,000 Ottomans remain after the ravages of the war. Steps are being taken to induce a large body of Russian Moslems to settle in Asia Minor. Salih Effendi is asking the Assembly to enact compulsory marriage of all males 23 years or over. Also all married couples must present the State with a child every three years. Thus it is hoped to raise the population of Turkey to 45,000,000 by 1940.
