Lord Burnham, lecturing at the Colonial Institute on the influence of the Press on the development of the Empire, said the spirit of independence made the Press such a great influence throughout the dominions that it was calculated to become the greatest power in a democratic State. The newspapers in Australia and New Zealand were more English than many English papers, which American novelties had so largely altered.
