Samples of marble for the column of the soldiers’ memorial at Timaru are being received here from various parts of New Zealand, as well as from Australia and Italy, twenty samples in all having been received to date. When all the samples are to hand the Memorial Committee will select the one which they like best. The column will be the largest of its kind in Australasia, and the marble cap, which will be 60 feet from the ground, will weigh five tons and will take six months to carve.—Timaru Herald.
