CAFE CHANTANT

THE OFFICIAL OPENING. The official opening of the Cafe Chanant, organised by the Northend Bowling Club for the purpose of securing funds with which to carry out improvements to the Queen’s Park, took place on Saturday afternoon in the presence of a large number of the ’public. The opening ceremony was carried out by His Worship the Mayor (Mr Bain), who complimented the Club on the worthy objects it had set out to obtain the required funds for, and also commended their effort to the public for its generous support. Very elaborate arrangements were made by the Club for the carrying out of the function, which will continue for the whole of the week. The principal attraction, of course, is the surprise packets and the support which the public gave this particular attraction on Saturday afternoon and evening, during which over 2000 tickets were sold, speaks well for its popularity and future success.

There are also a variety of stalls laden with attractive goods, and these also have been generously supported by the public. The officials responsible for the function are Mr W. G. Watson, chairman of committees, Mr T. A. Wallace, supervisor, Messrs W. B. O’Toole, D. J. Wesney and A. Cutt, organisers. Following are the stall-holders: — Sweets —Mesdames T. Meredith (convenor) and Mrs Wren.

Art—Mrs Arney Wesney (convenor), Mrs N. Wallace, Mrs Robertson, Mrs Leete, Mrs Credgington, Mrs Scrymgeour and Miss Legg.

Flower Stall—Mrs T. A. Wallace, Mrs Webb,' Misses Conland, Duncan and Maclaren.

Produce—Mrs T. Bird (convenor), Mrs Spry, Mrs D. J. Wesney and Miss Padget. Cakes—Mrs Harry Smith (convenor), Mrs Dickinson and Mrs Wesney. Apron Stall—Mrs A. Legall, Mrs Pasley, Mrs V. Smith and Mrs A. Noble. Art and Fancy—Mrs W. G. Tait (convenor), Mrs A. Cutt, Mrs D. Scandrett and Mrs A. J. France.

Refreshments—Mrs A. Taylor (convenor), Mrs Joyce, Mrs Blue, Mrs Hannah and Mrs Evans.

Among the winners of the principal prizes offered in connection with the surprise packets on Saturday were: Oak cake stands, Mr Horton, Woodlands and Puffery. Pipe Rack, Mrs McKetterick; safety razor, A. KcKenzie; bike tyre, Mr Sutton; oak bedstead, Miss V. Allen, Waikiwi; bicycle lamps, Mrs Taylor and Mrs McEwan and half-ton coal, Mr Treloar.

An orchestra consisting of Mrs W. Millar, Miss Brockenshire, and Messrs A. Wills, G. Humphrey, J. Humphrey and A. Ferguson (leader), enlivened proceedings during the afternoon and evening sessions considerably, while added attractions at the latter were a sketch by Miss Muir and her party, as well as songs by Miss McLaren, Miss Liddell and Mr Frank Booth. The Southland Pipe Band also gave some selections during the evening.

The Cafe Chantant is well worthy of a visit by all citizens, as apart from the entertainment provided, the funds are to be used for a worthy object in the improvement of the Park.

Among the attractions to-night will be the dancing of Miss Madelene Vyner, who has been specially engaged for the purpose, and also a vocal and instrumental programme.

An entirely new set of prizes will also be provided for the surprise packets, which, judging by the response on Saturday, will be sold readily.
