CHARGED WITH ASSAULT

FIREMAN STRIKES AN ENGINEER. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, June 21. At the Police Court to-day Joseph Thurston, aged 47, a fireman, was charged with having assaulted George Craighead, the fourth engineer on the steamer Arawa, on the voyage from Panama by striking him •n the head with a large spanner. The evidence showed that Craighead gave the accused instructions to make a signal to the fireman in the forehold, but the accused refused and that when Craighead turned away it is alleged that accused struck him heavily on the back of the head, causing • serious injury. The ship’s doctor described Craighead’s condition as very serious. The accused pleaded guilty and was comfciitted for sentence. In a statement to the police he said that the assault was committed on the spur of the moment and that he was sorry immediately afterwards.
