FOOTBALL
TO-DAY’S MATCHES. The last week’s matches of the Wednesday competitions proved that the standard of play in this competition is going to be of a very high order. Marists’ well-deserved victory over Star proved the surprise of the season, and their all-round improvement has been the topic cf conversation during the week. To-day at 2.45 p.m. Marist will meet Winton, who had the honour last Wednesday of defeating “Blues.” This game will draw a large attendance of football fans and the form displayed by the Greens will be closely followed by them as giving some indication of the result of their next meeting with Star. At 2.15 p.m. the ever-popular clash Blues v. Star will commence. The Invercargill team, it is reported, will be considerably strengthened, and several new players to the Blue and Black livery will fill the raifks. A bright and interesting game can be relied upon.
