In the House of Representatives Mr Charlton moved an amendment to the Address-in-Reply stating that the Government had no longer retained the confidence of the House owing to its attempt to limit the rights of the Commonwealth regarding constitutional powers, with special reference to financial and industrial matter*, also on account of the unsatisfactory immigration arrangements. SYDNEY, June 14. The Governor presided over a preliminary meeting of the Pan-Pacific Congress. A committee was formed to supervise accommodation and hospitality to the visiting delegates. The Governor said he was anxious to see the Pacific Island Civil Service develop to be a model for the world, such as was the government of India in its early stages. The vehicular ferry Benelon, sunk recently, has been partly raised, and is expected to be beached to-day.
