ELECTION PETITION

SOUTH INVERCARGILL CASE. mr McChesney declared mayor. Mr G. Cruickshank, S.M., yesterday, delivered judgment in the case of the appeal against the return of Mr T. Mitchell as Mayor of South Invercargill. He said that he had decided to disallow the votes of Mr and Mrs Pryde, of Mr and Mrs Kepton, and of E. Prendergast, but to allow the votes of Checketts and his wife. Of the informal votes, one would go to Mr Mitchell and two to Mr McChesney. This left Mr Mitchell with 484 votes and Mr McChesney with 488 votes. The Magistrate said he would therefore declare Mr McChesney elected.
