SOCIAL CONDITIONS

“DISGRACE TO EMPIRE.” MR LLOYD GEORGE SPEAKS. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, June 10. Mr Lloyd George, speaking at Westbourne Park Church, said there were social conditions in Britain which were a disgrace to the world’s greatest Empire. Multitudes of people were living under infamous conditions which could and ought to be removed. Britain had spent £10,000,000,000 on war and never spent a thousandth part of that upon remedying slums. If an appeal similar to that of war times had been made to the nation’s patriotism for redress of social evils the nation would have been transformed. Only the churches could arouse the national conscience to a sense of social duties. The world’s real trouble at the present was the enshrinement of force above right which appeared in domestic, social and economic as well as in international questions. Unless they showed a nev temper he d/waiied of civilisation.
