AMERICAN DEFENCE

CONFERENCE URGES INCREASED VOTE. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) WASHINGTON, June 8. - (Received June 9, 2.30 p.m.) A conference of sixty prominent educationists, clergymen and welfare workers with the War Department, has endorsed a vigorous programme of military preparedness in the United States. While the Conference is opposed to militarism it 'favoured a larger naval defence appropriation. It also passed the following resolution:— “Peace within the country and peace among the nations of the earth is a sacred mission to which America has devoted herself and her resources, but to pursue it unarmed and undefended would be the quickest way to invite war.”
