Canadian and Australian trade were featured in the House of Commons’ debate on the Budget schedules. The Opposition leader (Mr Meighan) asked Mr Robb the results of his visit to Australia. Mr Robb replied that the Australian Government was meeting next week, and he hoped to answer fully thereafter. The Finance Minister (Mr Feilding) said he was advised that the proposed preference raising the duty on currants was influencing the Australian Government to come to terms on preference, but the old duty woulf’ stand until a bargain was made. Progressive members opposed preference strongly, stating that it was an expensive was oi securing agreement when Canada h.ad a good supply nearer home.
