COUNTY ELECTIONS

HEAVY POLLING SEVERAL SURPRISES SOUTHLAND COUNTY RESULTS. The weather conditions throughout South* land were all that could be desired yesterday for the triennial election of representatives on the County Councils of Southland and Wallace and the interest taken by the ratepayers was greater than was the case at the last election. Aa result the voting was very much heavier and it is estimated that close on 3000 out of the 6882 ratepayers on the Southland County roll recorded their votes. The returns from the various ridings show that in every instance the voting was greater than last election by two toi three hundred votes. This fact shows that the electors have taken a wider interest than hitherto. In several of the ridings some surprises were effected in the defeat of the sitting members, notably Mr McKenzie in the Toetoes riding, who waa defeated by Mr Golden, Mr Stewart, who was defeated by Mr Wray it for his seat as representative of the Oreti Riding, and the defeat of Mr Clark by Mr Neiderer for the Waihopai riding. Two very close contests were also recorded in the Hokonui and Wallacetown ridings where Messrs Bowmar and Fraser, the sitting members respectively, just managed to retain their seats by a small majority. More than usual interest was taken in the election of representative* to the Electric Power Board,, Mr Adam Hamilton, the Hon. A. F. Hawke, Mr Thomas Fraser, Mr Bowmar and Mr Middleton being returned by substantial majorities. The election of two representatives of the Southland County on the Bluff Harbour Board resulted in the return of the sitting members, Messrs Fleming and Fraser. The work of the Returning Officer (Mr A. J. Service) and his staff vuas in every way satisfactory and. considering there were no fewer than 99 booths throughout the district, the figures were available with, out any undue delay, the final result* being made known shortly before ten o’clock. Fine weather prevailed throughout the W T allace County for the elections yesterday and the polling was heavy. Chief interest centred in the poll for the election of two members to represent the County on the Southland Electric Power Board. Two of the nominees, Messrs T. A. Buckingham and L. Cody were members of the last Board, but the latter was defeated yesterday by a new candidate Mr D. J. Heenan. In the election of members to the County Council two past members were defeated, but the majority of the sitting members for the Hospital Board were returned. The result* were as follow: POWER BOARD.
