SINGAPORE BASE

NEWSPAPER APPLAUDS PROPOSAL. (By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) LONDON, May 3. (Received May 3, 8.5 p.m.). The Morning Post, in an editorial, says: “The decision of the Government to develop a naval base at Singapore which, for us, is a strategic key to the Pacific, is heartily to be applauded. The base is not a challenge or threat to any Power. It is a mere recognition of our great interests in the East, interests inseparable from our duties to Australia and New Zealand. As for the argument that the base is a flouting of the Nations, it would be well to consider what the League of Nations would be worth J the naval strength of its most prominent member, were reduced to nullity.
