NORTH INVERCARGILL
PUBLIC HALL SOCIETY. At the annual meeting of the North Invercargill Public Hall Society held in the schoolhouse last evening, Mr W. A. Anderson presided over a fair attendance of members. The annual report stated that the efforts of the committee had been confined to the work of securing for North Invercargill the establishment of a public hall. The first question which had presented itself was that of securing a suitable site. After somewhat protracted negotiations with the Invercargill Corporation it was gratifying to report that the committee had secured the freehold of section 139, block 2, Charleston, on terms favourable to the committee. With the object cf raising funds it was decided to hold a carnival, and the results had Been highly satisfactory. Dances and concerts had also been held, and the proceeds from these had considerably augmented the committee’s funds. The thanks of the committee were due to the North Invercargill School Committee for the use of the school i building. It was with considerable pleasure that the committee had to report the receipt of a very handsome donation by Miss Hawke towards the building fund. Miss Hawke had donated a half-acre section in Chelmsford street, and the thanks of the committee were due to her for her generous offer. From inquiries made the committee was of the opinion that the prospects for financing the scheme were good, and it felt justified in recommending to the incoming committee that the work of erecting the hall should be proceeded with as early as possible. The balance-sheet showed receipts amounting to £356 9/5, and expenditure £73 15/5. The total assets of the Society amounted to approximately £6OO. The report and balance-sheet were adopted. The election of office-bearers resulted as follows:—President, Mr W. A. Anderson; vice-presidents, Mrs J. A. Hanan, and Mr W. Crawford; committee, Messrs E. Sheehan, T. A. Henry, F. Strang, J. H. Sadlier, A. Hughes, D. Fairweather, J. P. Scott, J. H. Kisseil, W# Fraser, and Miss Langskaill. It was decided to recommend to the committee that the work of erecting the hall be put in hand as early as possible.
