RACING TAXATION

PROBABLE REDUCTION ANNOUNCED BY PREMIER. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, February 19. The heavy taxation of small racing clubs and of owners was the subject of representations made to the Prime Minister to-day, by Messrs Witty, De la Perrelle and Lye, M.P’s. They stated that many of the smaller clubs found it impossible to carry on under existing conditions, and looked forward to immediate relief, otherwise some would be obliged to cease operations. Horse owners found that when training expenses, fees and taxation were paid, there was nothing left of the stakes. The Prime Minister replied that in accordance with the arrangement made, with the racing clubs, two years ago, he proposed to introduce legislation, during next session which would, to a certain extent, relieve clubs of taxation. He had to be guided by the financial position, but he could not forget that horse-owners voluntarily offered in time of stress, to submit to a 5 per cent, tax on stakes, on the understanding that that would be reviewed after two years. He would adhere strictly to that arrangement and would ask the House to legislate accordingly.
