GLAND GRAFTING

A FRENCH REJUVENATOR THROWN OUT OF MEDICAL CONGRESS /(By Telegraph.—Press Asm. —Copyright). (United Service.) LONDON, October 6. The Daily Mail's Paris correspondent states that extraordinary scenes were witnessed at the French Congress of Surgery. Dr. Voronoff, director of the Laboratory of the Experimental Surgery of the College de France, the originator of the idea of monkey-gland grafting to rejuvenate j old men, was thrown out of Congress and j prevented from stating his ideas. The I expulsion was apparently due to a news- ! paper interview with Dr Voronoff. ■ The scene was one of great confusion. IDr Voronoff and Professor Hartman, a well-known surgeon, engaged in an excited argument, shouting and waving their hands. They were surrounded by dozens !of famous surgeons, all gesticulating. Fin- : ally Dr Voronoff was hustled out of doors. ! Later, interviewed by the Daily : Marl, be’ recounted the communication . which he derived to make to the Congress, j He stated that he had practiced the grafting i of the interstitial glands of large apes on ‘ seven different male patients. The first i experiment was made in 1920. The first i two were successful, and the third grift was • carried out on a man of 59 years, who 1 explained of ill-health and loss of mem- ; ory’ The graft took well, and he recovered his full intellectual powers, and his health was greatly improved. The fourth experiment was on a man who was showing every sign of senile decay, and was unable to express his thoughts. After grafting the glands of a large cjmoceptal monkey, he was markedly improved. His virility returned, his body became well set up, his eyes bright, and he resumed his former life. Another patient, an Englishman named Arthur Evelyn Liardett, was the best proof of the efficacy of the experiment. “He travelled to Paris to testify,” said Dr. Voronoff. “He was aged 76, and operated on in 1921. Eight months after the operation I was stupified to see the change that had taken place. He had lost half of his embonpoint, and his aspect was cheerful, his movements being active and his eyes clear. He had certainly recovered thirty years of his lost youth. On reexamining him twenty months after the operation, I found the change fully maintained.” EX-KAISER DESIROUS OF TREATMENT DR. VORONOFF AGREEABLE. LONDON, October 7. (Received October 8, 5.5 p.m.) The Daily Express’s Paris correspondent says news has reached Berlin from Doorn that the ex-Kaiser is anxious to undergo Dr. Voronoff’s monkey gland rejuvenation treatment. Inquiries in Berlin official circles confirm the news. Dr. Voronoff, however, says he has not yet received a. request from the ex-Kaiser. and questions whether the matter is not a joke. Nevertheless he would not refuse to perform the operation, saying that everybody, even the ex-Kaiser, had a right to rejuvenation. Mr Liardet, the 76-year-old Englishman, who has come, to Paris to attend the Faculty of Medicine, testifies to the efficacy of the treatment. He looks the picture of health, and says he feels twenty years younger.
