SOCKBURN AERODROME

GOVERNMENT PURCHASE ADVOCATED (Special to the Times.) CHRISTCHURCH. October 4. The Lyttelton Harbour Board support.*" the establishment of aerodromes in the four centres of the Dominion. To-day it decided to urge the retention of the Sockburn aerodrome under Government supervision. Mr H. T. Armstrong (a Labour member of the Board) said the Scckburn aerodrome had been a white elephant, and like many other white elephants people wanted to foist it on to l-he Government. It had been a failure. He believed that only one student had been trained in flying since the armistice of 1918. “We should not be led by public opinion to press the Government to do something that is not necessary,” said Mr R. Macartney. Mr Armstrong on the voting was the only dissentient from the proposal to urge the Government to retain the aerodrome.
