FOOTBAIL REFEREE ASSAULTED. A BROKEN JAW. (Per United Press Association.) LEVIN, May 22. A disgraceful incident occurred at Shannon on Saturday during a junior football match between the Levin Rovers and Shannon. Mr Claridge, the referee, ordered a local player off the field for obscene language. This action was resented by the home team, and the spectators, who closed around the referee and assaulted him, rendering him unconscious and breaking his jaw. He was removed to the Palmerston North Hospital Charges of obscene lang nage and assault are to be laid against four Shannon players.
