BRITAIN AND ITALY
THE SUGGESTED ENTENTE ROME NEWSPAPER COMMENT DEFENCE OF MEDITERRANEAN. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) RPME, May 21. (Received May 22, 0.5 p.m.) The newspapers, inspired by Mr Lloyd George’s speech to journalists, have reopened the discussion of an Anglo-Italian entente. The Giornale d’ltalia affirms the almost certianty that the speech was the result of a new diplomatic pact which has come into existence between England and Italy and has been recognised by an agreement for the defence of the Mediterranean and the equilibrium necessary in the interests of general peace. The Messagero declares that England realises that the developments of aviation has ended her naval supremacy, and now needs the help of Italy, which commands the airway eastwards.
