EDUCATION INSTITUTE
PROPOSED FEDERATION OF TEACHERS. (Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, May 18. At the Educational Institute conference reports were made with reference to the increasing amount of clerical work put on teachers. It was stated that the task of compiling returns and keeping elaborate work books left a teacher no time for reading. There was a long discussion on a proposal to organise on the lines of an alliance of all educational bodies in the Dominion, the idea being to evolve a Teachers’ Federation under a council in which the allied bodies would be equally represented irrespective of their numerical strength. It was generally agreed that some euch alliance Was necessary, but a strong feeling was expressed that nothing should be done to compromise the Institute's independence of action or obscure its identity. It ww generally decided to send representatives from the conference to a meeting of representatives of all educational bodies, for an exchange of views. The annual report showed an increase of membershrip from 4000 to 4325. The trust account amounted to £1952.
