WORK AND WAGES

AUSTRALIAN BASIC WAGE (By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) SYDNEY, May 13. The minority report of the Board of Trade favoured £3 15/9 as the basic wage, contending that £3 18/- was too high and that the cost of living reductions warranted a decrease of 6/9. The employers believe the Board’s decision will assist to relieve unemployment. Many prefer not to reduce wages if the employees work longer hours and increase production. The general feeling is that the trades unions will accept the decision, but the Labour Council threatens an industrial upheaval when the reduction is made effective.
