THEFT OF COUNCIL FUNDS £478 TAKEN. (Per United Pres* Association) WELLINGTON, March 30. A cashier in the Traffic Inspector’s offios of the City Council, named Moncey Thomas, was charged before the Magistrate yesterday with between July 11, 1919, and January 22, 1922, stealing £476 Ils lOd belonging to the Wellington City Council. Accused is single, and aged 25. The Traffic Inspector said Thomas had been employed by the Council about ten years. It was his duty to receive all moneys paid in for licenses issued and motor registration, and lie should have paid the money to tne City Treasurer every flay and prepared a schedule in duplicate showing the amounts received each day. The schedule, was signed by the Traffic Inspector of some responsible officer. James Ward, Government Auditor, said he had just completed an audit of th* books and had discovered the defalcations There had been an audit in 1919-20 and it had not been discovered. Accused, in a atatement, said he kept nr. record of money taken. His salary was JlB6 per annum. He had spent the money. It waa explained that carbon record* had always been left by accused, but he did not account for the money received. Accused pleaded guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court for *Bntenc*. Bail was refused.
