NEW SOUTH WALES ELECTIONS.
(To the Editor). Sir, —I notice in the headlines on the N.S.W. Elections in the various newspapers, “ Labour’s Defeat,” etc., but you carefully omit to mention the fact as to how the defeat has come about. You should also tell your readers that the Conservatives and Liberals combined to oust Labour, but the Labour Party still holds the largest number of votes recorded as a single party. I am, etc., T. J. STOKES 177 Liddel Street.
(Our correspondent forgets that under proportional representation the opinion of the country is disclosed and the figures, so far, suggest that New South Wales is against the government led by M. Dooley. The fact that the Labour party has more votes than any other single party is of small moment, when the aim i« to secure a government representing as near as possible the views of the majority of the electors. The fact that the government has lost more seats to its opponents than it has gained is enough to justify the statement that the Labour Party has been defeated. —Ed. 8.T.)
