UNEMPLOYMENT
GOVERNMENT’S RELIEF SCHEME IN OPERATION. (Special to the Times.) WELLINGTON, May 19. The Government has received communications from several parts of the country within the last day or two stating that unemployment is increasing, and asking what steps are being taken to deal with it. The Government’s scheme, as a matter of fact, is already in operation, and men are being sent by the Labour bureaux to various works approved by the Cabinet. Ministers are forced by the financial stringency to proceed cautiously, but they are not allow ing unemployed to accumulate.
