AMERICAN STRIKE

SEAMEN AUTHORISE SETTLEMENT.

EMPLOYERS AND COLLECTIVE BARGAINING. (By Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.) NEW YORK, May 19. (Received May 19, 9.40 p.m.) The Steamship Owners’ Association has decided to sign no more agreements with seagoing labour organisations. This means that the union-' will not be consulted regarding wages and working conditions. Labour regards this move as a repudiation of the principle of collective bargaining. After an all day conference at Washington the striking seamen's representatives authorised the Secretary for Labour, Mr Davis, to reach a settlement on their behalf with the owners and accept such reductions as he deems proper.
