WAR MEMORIAL
PROPOSED CARNIVAL. RUGBY UNION’S SUPPORT ENLISTED. A deputation consisting of Messrs John Stead, E. R. Wilson and D. Scott waited on the Union with regard to the War Memorial. Mr Stead said that it was proposed to have a whole day set apart, say in Jubilee Celebration Week, in order to raise money for the War Memorial. The Memorial Committee had in view a scheme by which it was proposed to ask the Commercial Travellers to assist in the matter, while Mr Atkinson, the manager of St. Leon’s Circus, which was wintering in Southland, had promised to cooperate in the scheme. There was reason why they should not raise £JOOO. Mr Wilson said that the Commercial Travellers’ Committee was favourable to the scheme and had suggested that all sports bodies should take part. Mr Atkinson had a number of novel ideas on the subject, he having had experience of similar undertakings in other centres. Mr D. Scott supported the first two speakers. Mr Geddes, in thanking the deputation for their attendance, said that the Rugby Union was prepared to do its best in the matter. The delayed sailing of the Son th African team was likely to upset the rep. matches arranged and the Union could not say offhand what date would be suitable for it to take part in the proposed gathering. Probably September would suit' best, but the deputation could rest assured that the Union would use its best endeavours to assist. I (Hear, hear.) It was decided that the Union should cooperate in a scheme as outlined, and that action be deferred until the South African dates were fixed.
