PROHIBITION PARTY

WELCOME TO MR JAMES MARION. In the social hall of the Y.M.C.A., on Tuesday night the local prohibitionists extended a welcome to Mr James Marion, formerly general secretary of the N.S.W. Alliance. Mr J. S. Baxter presided. The Rev. John Dawson, secretary of the New Zealand Alliance was present and commended Mr Marion to Southland supporters. He stated that Mr Marion would represent the Alliance in Otago and Southland and was under engagement to remain in New Zealand until the next licensing poll, two years hence. Mr Marion, in responding, stated (hat the eyes of Australia were on New Zealand, and a victory in the Dominion would be reflected in Australia, where prohibition sentiment was growing rapidly. His work would be largely directed to removing misconceptions, which arose out of the circulation of erroneous statements in connection with prohibition in the United States and Canada. Having visited these countries and investigated the reform, he was satisfied with the remarkable stren’gth of the prohibition situation. At a future date Mr Marion will deliver a series of prohibition lectures in support of dominion prohibition.
