RAILWAY DISASTER
TERRIBLE OCCURRENCE IN INDIA. HEAVY LOSS OF LITE. (By Telegraph—Press Assn— Copy righto) (Australian and N.Z. Cable Association-) DELHI, April 28. A disastrous railway smash is reported. The AJlahabad-Diehra Dun express collided with a goods train at Newanawda. Casualties are’estimated at 150 killed and 57 injured. The carriages were overcrowded, containing 1100 mairtage paiiaes and 50 Gurkhas. All the latter except seven were killed or burned to death. Several Europeans were travelling but so far none tire reported killed.
Tlie first three bogey carriages were smashed and caught fire. Men, women and children were pinned in the wreckage, anti struggled vainly, the flames spreading towards them.
The scene nf Ihe disaster was far from medical relief. The suffering of the injured was added to by a raging dust-storm. Among the wreckage lay a pool of molten silver reprerenting piles of rupees in the Indians’ baggage or melted bangias of women victims.
