AUSTRALIAN STRIKE
MINERS OBDURATE,
(Per United Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Sept. 29. Further advices from Sydney state that after renewed and exhaustive consultation between Mr Holme and the Council of Miners, a statement was made on behalf of the Federation that, irrespective of the consequences, the Federation would never recommend the acceptance of the Government's proposals to the men, considering that the Government has no desire to effect a settlement except on conditions the Federation considers humiliating and degrading to the men. The Government terms provide that the Government continue to work all mines; none of the mines to be treated as black; the Government manager to exercise discretion in the employment of men, but prior consideration to be given to miners previously employed; and rates of pay and conditions to remain as at August 1. SITUATION MORE HOPEFUL. [By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright.] [Australian and N.Z. Cable Association.] SYDNEY, September 30. Received October 1, 12.30 a.m. Gratifying reports from various coalfields indicate * the early resumption of work. Delegates from the Boards in most districts decided to accept the Government’s terms, and recommend the miners to return early this week.
