H. Whitcombe, head of the well-known printI ing and publishing firm of Whitcombe & I Tombs, aged 01, Messrs John Edward O’Connell and John Henry Forbes have been appointed in the places of Peter McKenzie and Andrew Fraser, resigned, to act in conjunction with Henry Birley, previously appointed, as trustees for the Glenorchy Public Cemetery. The death occurred in Invercargill yesterday, after a very short illness, ot Mr W. S. Mitchel, of "Norwood," Waikiwi, at the ago of 64. A native of Bmierana, County Donegal, Ireland, the late Mr Mitchel arrived in this country by the ship "Baron Blantyre” in 1876. He proceeded direct to the Manapouri Station as a cadet with the late Hon. ! Mr Matthew Holms, but almost immediately took over the managership of the station, which post ho held until 1895. In that year he removed to manage the Five Rivers Station, which he controlled for a 1 period of five years. At this time Mr
Mitchel was in partnership with the late Mr ,1. E. Watson and late Mr T. L. Barnhill in (he ownership of the Te Anau Estate (Lynwood Homestead!. In 1900 Mr Mitchel left Five Rivers and went to reside temporarily in the Bluff, removing to Invercargill, which has been his home ever since, in 1902. He carried on farming operations right up to the time of his death, although ho had not been too well for some years past. A keen angler and an ardent explorer of the Lake country, the late Mr Mitchel had a splendid collection of Maori curios. He was not very prominent in public life, but was for years a member of the Wallace County Council, having to travel from Mannpourl to attend meetings, and was a widely known light horse breeder. To mourn his loss he leaves a widow and four children—two daughters and two sons. Two. Mrs D. M. King (New Plymouth) and Mr H. S. Mitchel (Napier) arc in the North Island, but Mr Mervyn H. Mitchel is in Invercargill, where Miss Mitchel remains with her mother.
