A. AND P. ASSOCIATION

MONTHLY MEETING. The meeting of the executive of the Southland Metropolitan A- and P. Association, held yesterday, was attended by Messrs J. Fleming (president), ’ John Gilkison, D. Marshall, W. Clark, W. Charters, W. A. Cox, F. A. Price, John Macdonald, Jas. Drain, W. Roxburgh, and A. Gerrard. SHOWS IN WAR TIME. The General Manager of Railways (Mr E. H. Hiley) wrote that the Railway Department could not express any opinion In regard to the advisability of bolding Agricultural Shows during the war, but the Government had decided to restrict train services, and it was not intended to grant special railway facilities on the occasion of Agricultural and Pastoral Shows. The District Railway Traffic Manager wrote regretting that owing to the necessity of conserving coal stocks the Department could not run increased services or issue concession tickets. The Timaru A. and P. Association wrote that they intended to hold their annual Show as usual unless, in the opinion of the Efficiency Board, such action would be detrimental to the interests of the country and other Associations fell into line. The Canterbury Association wrote mat they had unanimously agreed to proceed with the Spring Show as usual. The President stated that the Otago Association had not yet replied as to what their intention was. The N.Z, Council of Agriculture wrote that it would be a great mistake to discontinue shows even for one year. It was decided to pass a resolution similar to that adopted by the Timaru Association. THE SCHEDULE. It was decided to hold a competition for the best collection of garden vegetables, and the prize money was provided by three members of the Executive, viz., Mr G. Chewings (£2 2s), Mr James Fleming (£1 Is), and Mr W. Clark (10s). They were thanked for their generosity.
