STATE BUTCHER SHOPS

THE AUCKLAND VENTURE. (Per United Press Association.) AUCKLAND, January 25. The Hon. W. D. S. Mac Donald, President of the Board of Trade, to-night received the following telegram from the secretary of the Board of Trade at Auckland in connection with the opening of two State butchers' shops there to-day: ’"The first day’s business at the Government shops constitutes a record, despite adverse conditions and an exceedingly hot day. The saleyards on Wednesday were evidently affected through the scheme. Beef prices were normal, but mutton prices were 2/- to 3/- less than last week’s rates. Everything is proceeding satisfactorily, but there is strong evidence apparent generally that the scheme should be extended.”
