OBITUARY

MR JAMES HUMPHRIES. The death occurred at his residence East Invercargill, on Thursday of an old resident of the town, Mr James Humphries, at the age of 70 years. The deceased was born in Ludlow, Shropshire, England, where, after leaving school he was apprenticed to the butchering trade and very often, comparing conditions then in the Old Country and those now obtaining in New Zealand, referred to the fact that he had to serve three years before receiving any wages. In 1867, seewh&t appeared to be better prospects in this country he accompanied by Mrs Humphries, sailed in the Lady Egidia (Captain Currie) and landed in Port Chalmers, after a voyage of about ten weeks, a quick passage in those days. Mr and Mrs Humphries then came down to Invercargill, where the deceased took employment as a journeymaji butcher, ami after serving in several shops commenced business at East Jnvercargill in partnership with the late Mr James Dodds, at the corner of Yarrow and Mary streets about 06 years ago. The late Mr Humphries shortly afterwards established a business at the opposite corner of Yarrow and Mary streets, and was still carrying it on at the time of his death. On Thursday the deceased was about as usual attending to business and when lie retired to bed appeared to be in good health, .but shortly afterwards death occurred, the cause being heart failure. Mr Humphries was popular amongst all who knew him, his genial disposition and straightforward character winning him many friends who held him in the highest esteem, indeed it may truly he, said of him that he had no enemies. He was one of the oldest members of the Shamrock, Rose and Thistle Lodge of Oddfellows, having joined the Order in 1808. The deceased leaves a widow and eight of a familj—six daughters and two sons. 1
