While Private Joseph Ilazlelt, of the Sixteenth Reinforcement, was cycling in the East Hoad on Saturday afternoon he had the misfortune to be knocked down by a motor car and have an arm broken in his fall. Private Hazlett was making- satisfactory progress last night, but, of course, his departure with the Sixteenth is now wit of the question. A SUDDEN DEATH David Adamson, 32 years of age, employed as a turner in the Government Workshops, died at the Victoria board-ing-house, Clyde street, yesterday afternoon. Deceased had been out during the morning and on reaching home at 1i.1.i felt somewhat indisposed and retired to bed. He was sleeping soundly at 3 p.m., but was found dead at 7 p.m. An inquest will be held. A CHRISTCHURCH AFFRAY. A MAN KILLED. (Per United Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, July Hi. A tragic affair occurred in Cashel street, near the Cafe de Paris Hotel yesterday afternoon, resulting in the death of Fredk. William Allen, a labourer, aged 42 years, residing in Madras street. Allen and Private Michael Carey, of the Sixteenth Reinforcements, who was on final leave, engaged In a heated argument, Carey apparently suggesting that Allen was a shirker. The upshot was that Carey hit Allen three times in the face. Allen did not retaliate, but stood with his hands in his pockets, looking at his assailant. A constable went up to the soldier with the purpose of arresting him, but before he could do so Carey dealt Allen another smashing blow on the jaw. Allen was knocked down like a log. the back of bis striking the asphalt with tremendous force, rendering him unconscious. Allen died in the hospital early this morning. At the time of the assault both men were perfectly sober. Allen was a big, heavy man. Carey has been placed under arrest.
