Meagher explains the reason of his motion. As Mr Holman (N.S.W. Premier) had announced his intention to introduce an early closing bill on the reassembling ■of Parliament, he considered Senator Pearce's (Federal Defence Minister) action in closing the hotels in Sydney at 6 p.m. as calculated to seriously embarrass the State Government. LIQUOR QUESTION STIRRED UP. CONTROVERSY' RAGING. SY'DNEY, February 23. Received February 23, 9.50 p.m. Tlie early closing question is arousing intense public interest. The newspapers are inundated with letters, and a royal fight is proceeding as to the merits and demerits of late or earl yclosing, wet or dry canteens, the nationalisation of the sale of liquor, and the caucus decision. •The Hon. R. D. Meagher's motion, affecting the military measure, is much criticised. Senator Pearce declares that ho does not think he will lose a moment’s sleep because of the censure motion. WHEAT PRICES FIXED. MELBOURNE, February 23. Received February 23, 9.50 p.m. The wheat conference has granted, as from Ist April, a further advance of 6d a bushel for farmers’ wheat, and fixed the price for home consumption from Ist March at 4/9, enabling the 41b loaf to be sold at TVsd.
