WAR FUNDS ASSOCIATION
' INVERCARGILL BRANCH. A meeting of the provincial' committee of the Invercargill branch of the War Funds Association was held in the Municipal Chambers yesterday afternoon, Mr R. C. Tennant presiding .over an attendance of 25 ladies and gentlemen, while several apologies for nonattendance were received. The chairman explained the business of the meeting, was to make complete the arrangements for canvassing the town for members.
Mr E. P. Howard explained what the committee had done to date. In the first place they had considered it advisable that steps should be taken to approach the ladies and gentlemen associated with the Continuous Effort Committee, and that had been done. They had allocated the various areas, and had received a promise to help from each. In North Invercargill, East Invercargill, and South-east Invercargill there were ho members of the Provisional Committee residing, and no persons had been chosen to act meantime. The Continuous Effort Committee's boundaries extended beyond the proposed boundaries of the branch, and it was therefore necessary to decide how they were going to be situated in regard to places like South Invercargill and Waikiwi. The committee had written to the South Invercargill Borough Council, and had received a reply stating that in the Council’s opinion the proposal would not meet with sufficient success, owing to so many of the residents being connected with town organisations. North of the river was Collingwood, which'was in the County and outside the area, and north of that again was Waikiwi. Mrs Campbell and Mr L. Lexmle had given it as their opinion that there was hardly a charjce of forming a branch there, for a reason similar to that advanced in the case of South Invercargill. West Plains had also been communicated with, but ho reply had yet been received. On the motion of Mr M. Thomson and Mrs Howard, the chief canvasser in each area was added to the committee. It was agreed, on the motion of the Rev. R. M. Ryburn, that the areas of the Invercargill branch of the War Association be the same as those under the Continuous Effort scheme, and that in addition the business parts of the town be allocated amongst members. The following areas and chief canvassers were decided upon:— Northern! and Gala street. —Mr R. C. Tennent. Esk street, Tay street. Forth street, and two blocks between Ythan and Ness streets. —Rev.
